Andy Murray was knocked out of Wimbledon in round two on the tenth anniversary of his historic title win.
In a match spread over two days, he was beaten by fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who triumphed 7-6 (7-3) 6-7 (2-7) 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-4.
The Briton had taken a 2-1 set lead into the Friday afternoon, after the 11pm curfew cut proceedings short on Thursday night but was picked apart by the Greek in the sunshine, whose crucial breaking of the serve early in the final set ensured there was only going to be one winner.
Memories of the 36-year-old record-breaking 2013 victory over Novak Djokovic dominated the coverage leading up to the second half of the action but it wasn’t to be a happy anniversary for Murray who will be frustrated at surrendering a winning position.
There were even worries he was not going to be able to see out the match after going down with a groin injury accompanied by a shriek of pain moments before the end of play on the Thursday night.
But he looked sharp as ever the following day but just didn’t have enough to overcome Tsitsipas, who prepares to face Laslo Djere in round three.
The Scot's difficult relationship with injuries over the last few years have put a dampener on his decorated career. But ten years to the day of his greatest achievement – becoming the first Brit to win Wimbledon since 1936 – Murray has shown he can still go toe-to-toe with the best the game of tennis has to offer.
