Diogo Jota scored against his old club as Liverpool climbed to sixth with a 1-0 victory at Molineux.

The Portuguese forward scored the only goal of the game right before half-time with a drilled strike, parried in by the goalkeeper.

The hosts arguably could have had a penalty in the second minute when Alisson appeared to collide with Nelson Semedo after spilling a shot, but referee Craig Pawson immediately dismissed it.

A miserable day for Wolves was compounded when Rui Patricio suffered a concussion and was forced off towards the end of the match.

It was a much-needed win for the champions who had only won one of their last seven league games prior to the match.

Sadio Mane had a golden opportunity to give Liverpool the lead midway through the first half when he rounded Patricio but saw his shot blocked on the line.

The Reds did then take the lead on 47 minutes when Jota finished a quick attacking move with a stinging shot at the near post that Patricio was unable to keep out.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side had the opportunities but ultimately lacked the quality to grab an equaliser and missed their chance to climb up to 11th.

Meanwhile Jurgen Klopp’s men climb to sixth in the table with a top four finish not beyond the realms of possibility just yet.
