Italy swept past Turkey with a resounding 3-0 victory in the opening match of Euro 2020.
Second half goals from Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne and a Merih Demiral own goal helped the Italians to a comfortable win in their own national stadium.
Inspired by grizzled veteran Giorgio Chiellini, the Italy defence never looked like being breached with the Turks only registering three shots throughout the entire match.
In spite of this, as well as enjoying a substantial portion of the possession, it took a while for Roberto Mancini’s side to find the breakthrough, which came eight minutes into the second half when Juventus defender Demiral diverted Domenico Berardi’s cross into his own net.
Thereafter the game became more open as the Crescent-Stars looked for an equaliser and Immobile doubled his side’s lead thirteen minutes later before Insigne rounded off the tie on 79 minutes.
It was a highly convincing display from the Azzurri who soar to the top of the Group A and prove that the general perception of them being an unfancied team to go all the way in this competition is an unfair one.
Meanwhile Turkey will look to dust themselves off and go again when they face Wales in Baku next Wednesday.
