Cristiano Ronaldo became the all-time top goalscorer in the history of the Euros as Portugal defeated Hungary 3-0.
Having been frustrated for much of the game, three goals in the final ten minutes from Raphael Guerreiro and Ronaldo twice ensured Fernando Santos’ side got off to a winning start.
Playing in front of a packed out Puskas Stadium, the Magyars had a right to feel hard done by, having expertly contained their opponents for 80 minutes and scoring an offside goal.
Diogo Jota and Ronaldo each blazedgilt-edged chances to put their side in front over the bar, during an opening half the Navigators dominated.
Hungary grew into the second half, causing Portugal problems on the counter-attack, and thought they’d taken a shock lead with ten minutes left when Szabolcs Schon’s shot squeezed under Rui Patricio but the FC Dallas winger was correctly judged offside.
Four minutes later and their resistance was broken when Peter Gulacsi could not keep out Guerreiro’s deflected shot.
Moments later, Rafa was brought down whilst through on goal and Ronaldo converted the spot-kick to become the European Championship’s all-time top goalscorer and added another in the 92nd minute, bringing his tally up to 11, two ahead of previous record-holder Michel Platini.
The eventual scoreline certainly flattered Portugal but it was credit to their persistence that they finally got over the line and secured a valuable three points in a difficult Group F also including France and Germany.
Meanwhile, the vociferous Hungarian supporters that filled out their national stadium will no doubt feel gutted but also proud of how long their side held their own against the competition holders.
In the end, it was an outcome that didn’t truly represent the football match that was played out.
