A late Andros Townsend winner secured Everton’s passage to the Carabao Cup third round with a 2-1 win away at Huddersfield.
A header from Tom Lees cancelled out Alex Iwobi’s 26th minute opener before the summer signing from Crystal Palace secured the win eleven minutes from time with his first goal for the Toffees.
It was far from a routine victory for Rafael Benitez’s side over the Championship outfit with Moise Kean’s 59th minute dismissal making things more difficult for the away side.
A second-string Everton side took the lead on 26 minutes when Tom Davies played in Iwobi after a surging run through the Terriers midfield and the former Arsenal man calmly slotted past Lee Nicholls.
Carlos Corberan's side began to grow into the game towards the end of the half and their efforts were rewarded when Lees thumped home a header from a corner to level the score right before the interval.
A frustrating evening for young Italian striker Moise Kean was ended abruptly when he was sent off on the hour mark after a coming together with Sorba Thomas.
Despite being reduced to ten men, the Premier League side still found the winner on 79 minutes when Townsend rifled a cross from substitute Andre Gomes into the roof of the net.
The win sees the Toffees progress into the third round of the Carabao Cup and extends Rafael Benitez’s unbeaten record to three games after his appointment as Everton boss in July.
