France won 1-0 over Germany to complete the first round of Euro 2020 group fixtures.
Mats Hummels’ first half own goal made the difference as a strong French defensive unit proved impossible to break down for the impotent Germans.
An ingenious Paul Pogba pass on 20 minutes unlocked the Germany defence and found Lucas Hernandez, whose cross was turned into his own net by the Borussia Dortmund defender for the only goal of the game.
Joachim Low’s side could not find a way past their opponents who threatened to extend their lead through their lethal counter attacks, mostly orchestrated by the scintillating Kylian Mbappe.
Les Bleus had two goals ruled out for offside during the second half, one a magnificent solo goal by the 22-year-old and another an incisive cross from the PSG man turned home by strike partner Karim Benzema.
Germany’s best opportunity of the game came early in the second half when Serge Gnabry fizzed a strike just over the bar, but it was an otherwise lacklustre performance going forward.
Meanwhile France looked every bit as unstoppable as they had during their successful 2018 World Cup campaign and the victory gives them a great chance of qualifying from the ‘Group of Death.’
