Callum Wilson’s brace saw Newcastle end a nine-game winless run in the league with a comfortable 2-0 away win over Everton.

Graeme Jones, who had previously been Roberto Martinez’s no.2 during the Spaniard’s time at Goodison Park, had been appointed the Magpies’ assistant manager during the week and the impact was immediate as his new team played with a confidence that had been lacking in a torrid run of form.

The hosts struggled to get a grip on the game and were overwhelmed by their opponent’s high press which saw Steve Bruce’s side have the better chances in the first half as they looked to end a run of six straight defeats.

However, the Toffees still had the best opportunity in the first half when Richarlison got a bit of space and hit a shot from the edge of the area that stung the gloves of Karl Darlow.

Jordan Pickford was also forced into a superb reflex save, tipping a header over the bar from Callum Wilson, looking to add to his impressive record against the Blues.

He did so on 73 minutes, rising highest for a corner and flicking his header beyond Pickford as his side got the breakthrough they thoroughly deserved.

The Newcastle attack continued to press a lacklustre Everton with Wilson hitting the post after rounding the England goalie before putting the game to bed in added time after being left unmarked during a counter attack.

It was a vital win for an under pressure Bruce which helps his side in their relegation fight whilst Carlo Ancelotti’s side miss a huge opportunity to break the top five.
