CPD Y Rhyl 1879 convincingly won 5-2 against Bro Cernyw in their first home league game of the season.

Daniel Lloyd put the home side 1-0 up after 17 minutes before the visitors levelled 16 minutes later, leaving the half time score at 1-1.

A freak own goal from the opposition defender put Rhyl back in front on 48 minutes and two minutes later Lee Ellis slotted home from the penalty spot after Tom Cain was pushed in the six-yard area.

Ianto Roberts scored his second of the game on 62 minutes, making it 3-2 before Cain and Eamon Bulhalfaia completed the rout and rounded off a dominant Rhyl display in style.

The victory sees the Lilywhites climb the league table after a mixed bag of results in league and cup throughout August.

Left winger Lloyd got the hosts off to the perfect start after a poor opening quarter of few chances for either side before a Miles Todd mistake allowed Bro Cernyw to equalise on 33 minutes with a low drive from Roberts.

Rhyl got a stroke of good fortune on 48 minutes when the visitors’ goalkeeper failed to deal with a sliced clearance from his defender and just a minute later, Cain was fouled in the penalty area and Ellis converted the spot kick with aplomb, making the score 3-1.

A mix-up saw goalkeeper Ryan Roberts rush and fail to win the ball allowed Ianto Roberts to thump the ball into an empty net and pull his side back into the match just past the hour mark.

But just three minutes later, Cain restored the two goal cushion, smashing in a strike from the edge of the area after Todd’s header was cleared off the line.

A well-worked move involving Ellis and Cain was finished off by Bulhalfaia, making it 5-2 with five minutes to go and that was how it remained.

It was a performance full of confidence and quality and despite having no substitutes available, Rhyl were able to record a commanding victory in their first league match at Belle Vue.
