Chelsea have won the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Manchester City in Porto.
Kai Havertz’s goal towards the end of the first half proved decisive as the West London side seal the trophy for the second time in their history.
Meanwhile for Pep Guardiola’s side, the elite prize remains elusive as they struggled to carve out opportunities against Thomas Tuchel’s well-organised defensive unit, racking up just one shot in target in the 90 minutes.
Eyebrows were raised when Guardiola elected to start without a holding midfielder, leaving both Fernandinho and Rodri left on the bench.
It proved a mistake as on 42 minutes the Citizens’ defence was carved apart too easily by Mason Mount’s incisive pass and Havertz got it past Ederson and tapped home the only goal of the game.
Opportunities for City to equalise were few and far between but it took a magnificent block from Antonio Rudiger to prevent Phil Foden scoring in the first half and in the dying embers, Riyad Mahrez saw a snatched shot from the edge of the area sail agonisingly over the bar.
It is the third time Chelsea have triumphed over Man City this season and it comes on the biggest stage of all.
