Mikey O’Neill scored in his first match back for Preston North End U19s in four weeks as his side demolished Port Vale 4-0.

The energetic attacking midfielder enjoyed a fine performance on his return to the team and rounded it off with an expertly-taken goal on 33 minutes.

He ran at the Port Vale defence before taking the ball on the outside of his defender and stroking the ball across goal into the bottom far-hand corner.

“It’s good to get back and get a goal,” he said to PNE.Com after the match.

“I thought it was a very good goal as well so I’m very happy with that.”

The 17-year-old said it took a while to readjust after not playing a competitive match for a while, but by the end he was disappointed not to have added a couple more goals!

“It was a bit tough at first,” he admitted.

“We’ve been playing a new shape as well so I needed to get used to that for about 15 minutes but after that, I was fine and fitted in very well I thought, although I should have scored more!”

O’Neill was impressed with how well his side controlled and won the game by such a resounding scoreline.

He said: “I thought it was a very good performance.”

“You could tell watching us that it was very dominant, and it could have been five or six to be honest.

“But it’s good we got the win in the end, 4-0 and a clean sheet so can’t complain.”
