Southport’s Tommy Fleetwood was cruelly denied his first PGA Tour win after losing out to Nick Taylor in a thrilling play-off at the Canadian Open.
Playing in his native Canada, Taylor made a 72-foot putt on the fourth hole of the play-off to clinch victory. Meanwhile for Fleetwood, it’s the fifth time he has finished runner-up at a PGA Tour event.
The pair had been neck-and-neck throughout the day, each posting a six-under 66 and setting a clubhouse target of 72. Once the contest reached the play-off stage, there was still nothing to separate the two with each of them scoring a birdie on the first hole and then making par on the second and third.
It was on the fourth round, on the par-five 18th hole that Taylor was able to make an extraordinary putt and seal a historic win, becoming the first Canadian to win the event since 1954.
Fleetwood took to Twitter after the event, saying: “Thank you Canada for an amazing atmosphere. Congrats @ntaylorgolf59, what an unbelievable three days of golf you’ve just played and what a moment for you and your country!
“We’ll start again tomorrow. See you at work.”
